It didn’t take me long at all to realize that this story was really a retread of the two-parter from Superman: The Animated Series called “The Main Man”. In it, Lobo was hired to take in Superman and hand him over to an alien collecting the last of various races. With Lobo being the last Czarnian, he too was captured, leading to him and Superman teaming up in order to escape. Rival bounty hunters got involved, but in the end, Superman and Lobo beat the big alien villain and went their separate ways. Solid episode.Īs Last Sons begins, Lobo takes on his latest bounty: a gang of outlaws led by the reptilian Xemtex. Once finished with them, Lobo is told by his agent Tartan Quarantino about a million cred bounty specifically chosen for Lobo. ![]() The criminal in question? An Earthling everyman named John Jones. As any comic reader knows, John Jones is the low-profile alter-ego of J’onn J’onz, the Martian Manhunter. So the secret identity of a superhero is wanted for unnamed crimes from part of the galaxy that he had never encountered and Lobo has been hand-picked and overpaid to take him in. It’s a set-up if there ever was one, but the Main Man refuses to notice. Not only is he playing into the hands of the mysterious Alpha being, but there are other threats. For one, the remainder of Xemtex’s gang is out there, looking for revenge and a group of bounty hunters led by a guy named Angel Eyes is interested in stealing Lobo’s bounty. ![]() Now that the basic story is out of the way, let’s cover the main strength of this book: the characters. Superman: You may have noticed a lack of his mention in the above paragraph. That might surprise you, considering he gets top billing. There is a secondary comic strip advertising the product line of Binky Bombs.Sorry to say, Superman’s appearance in this is a borderline cameo. ![]() Tartan says that twelve billion is a lot even for Lobo and inquires to the cause - Lobo simply says that he spilt his beer. Tartan receives a message that the insurance company has to pay out twelve billion credits for the damage, which has bankrupted them. Out of the burning ruins of the bazaar, Erik can be seen, and some of the crowd tell Jonas that he's going to have to pay up - until walking out of the flame is none other than Lobo, hoisting Erik's head on a pike. Jonas and a number of the Bazaar patrons escape outside, and Lobo and Erik take the nukes to each other and cause a huge nuclear explosion. Lobo finally admits to the Khund's toughness and asks if he wants to go "all th' way" - Erik agrees, and they head for the Binky-brand nuclear warheads. Both survive and confront each other again, though the battle has taken a serious toll on both. They fire on each other in the air before colliding. Lobo goes for a World War 2 style fighter plane, while Erik takes a "One Man Blam-O-Copter". The Bazaar security forces eventually show up and try to stop the fight, who get summarily obliterated by a bazooka blast from Lobo.Īfter the bazooka duel ended in a draw, both agree to escalate again. Lobo goes for a powerax and Erik an electrified whip eventually they change to firearms, and finally to bazookas. They both stab each other with the broken rapiers, and then agree to escalate the duel. Lobo draws first blood, and then they fight until both of their rapiers break down to the guard. Early on, Jonas begins to take bets on the match as the crowd initially thinks that Erik is looking like the favorite. Lobo is about to attack with his hook 'n' chain, but Erik stops him, informing him that under the Khund's code, the insultee gets to choose weapons.Įrik's choice of weapons are rapiers. One of the Bazaar's staff objects, but Jonas knocks him out. Erik is extremely insulted by this and slaps Lobo, challenging him to a duel to the death as per the Khund's Savage Code. ![]() Lobo then takes the Totem Pelt and wrings it to drink the spilt beer. However, he trips on a cable and spills his beer on Erik the Khund's Totem Pelt. Meanwhile, Lobo and Jonas Glim head to the Big Big Arms Bazaar, where Lobo is excited to update his armory. Tartan Quarantino has just purchased a life insurance policy for Lobo. Oh man, I knew I wuz gonna have fun t'day! Just fraggin' knew it! - Lobo
